Oh, see those lights...
'i Light Marina Bay'... It's here again, after almost 2 years (inaugural was held in October 2010). This time round I lowered my expectations tremendously till the extend that it's not on my top priority list of must go (do I even have such a list?).
Walking is good for health. Therefore I decided to go for a peep to see what's installed before all comes to an end on 1st April 2012.
I guess it's me that got a totally wrong idea of the event 2 years ago. Back then I thought the event would really light up Marina Bay, making it so damn brighter than before. In actual fact, it is just an event showcasing some light art displays.
After 2 years of pondering, I have finally corrected my mentality. This time round I am prepared to expect nothing much from the event. Maybe it's this 'whatever' mentality that resulted in me ranking this event in the 'wow' list of exhibitions this year. It is so much better than the biennale of last year (and the Merlion isn't trapped in a room this time).
Some displays are of large scale which does amuse people, although the concept behind it is really very simple, such as projecting some lights and patterns on a structure. This is especially evident on the Merlion and ArtScience Museum façade. Whereas some displays are just led light sticks/tubes sticking or standing here and there.
End of the day I wonder what's the point of this exhibition. I believe the explanation is set out somewhere, but I'm just not reading it...I'm the ignorant one here. I believe to many of us, we won't really be bothered to find out the real meaning and purpose of such event. And seriously, it's just lights! But lights has an unknown reason of attracting us (or just me) to it when it lights up. It is also very amusing to see what can be done to lights...and this event showcases it very amusingly!
From my quick peep to the event, I saw tourists being entertained by the displays from their snapping of photos, discussion of the displays and their faces of enjoyment despite the humid weather. I guess the signature Singapore skyline backdrop has a huge factor into their enjoyment. The skyline combined with the various displays, a different scenery of Singapore has been created. Maybe that's one of the many purpose to this event, attracting tourist to this little sunny island city state.
I do look forward to the next 'i Light Marina Bay'. And it seems to me that proper planning for a serious visit to the next one would not be a waste if the standards from this 2012 display is maintained, or even improved even further for the subsequent showcases. The Gardens by the Bay South will open in June this year...this might be an extended site to the next showcase in 2013 or 2014! Now that does excite me.
Majority of these photos are shot handheld, with the help of technology. Quality aren't really that prefect, but it's good enough for memory purpose of the event. There are actually lot's of displays but I'm just too tired to find them all...
This time round I also saw lots of people carrying lots of bulking equipment walking here and there and all over the place setting up this and that and all they brought to snap snap snap. That's so tiring. And I wonder, what for? I guess it's just not me to be doing what they are doing, and likely will never be for me, simply because carrying and setting up all those equipment is so tiring. The most I would find myself doing, since many days ago, is just to set up a tripod for night shots. But it seems that the handheld night shot mode does produce quite decent shots, I guess I can forgo the tripod when the need isn't really needed. Amusing technology.
[ top: 1 ] This was the tallest skyscraper (left) in Singapore in the 1960s? Far from today's standards of skyscrapers. Conservation efforts done quite well to its façade...but I have no idea about its interior.
Alright, let me start on all the light tubes/sticks and blink blink I saw...
[ top: 2 ] I find this is actually quite cool. I think there's a storyline that goes along with all the blinking, but I was more amused by the combination of all these tubes with the skyline behind it. And thanks to the handheld night mode, the photos resulted a certain kind of glow to the tubes.
[ top: 1, below: 2 ] Nothing really special here, just lights of different patterns and colours lighting the surface of a ball that isn't really round... So why are people trying so hard to snap, snap and snap? I think I am one of them too as I spent really quite a while staring and snapping at this ball...fully handheld. I think the answer is found with what type of visual patterns are being created on it, as seen on the next two photos.
[ top: 1 ] Another tubes of led lights that seems so meaningless from first glance and many more glance. The meaningless level will fall when you step up to the control panel and do something on it. But I did nothing, so this is forever a meaningless piece of rectangular light display.
[ top: 1, below: 2 ] This is one cool display... Three 'leaves' of the façade of ArtScience Museum was filled with projections of some images/patterns from projectors. But butterflies is not what I wanted to see...didn't want to wait any longer, so just have to do with butterflies for memories. And I am very sure the photo of the skyline with the ArtScience Museum on the left wasn't shot handheld. I rested the camera on the fencing, which I saw many people did too, after I am done with my shot.
[ top: 1, below: 3 ] Lastly, who can miss out the Merlion on display, which is on display for almost everyday of every year since it was created.
This time round various colours/shades has been projected on it. The end product is a colourful Merlion, one which many of us won't see on the actual Merlion structure, except in drawings.
As night falls and the nearby MBS starts their laser light show, attention is being drawn to all the lasers instead of the Merlion. Regardless of those laser beams or the lights projecting on Merlion, this Merlion park spot is sure one crowded place on both weekdays and weekends.
What's so interesting about this white mystical figure and all the laser beams shining from the opposite MBS that attracts so many people? It's nice no doubt, but is it really that awesome? The reason I got myself there was mainly to admire the colourful Merlion as this is not a everyday thing. The laser light show is almost everyday (if I'm correct). As the event comes to a close tomorrow, I doubt I will drop by to see the Merlion any time soon. Here's a few of the colourful Merlion.
It does makes me wonder, are there any possibilities for the relevant authorities lighting up the Merlion in such a manner during some special days or occasions? Both the plain white and this colourful Merlion does create their own unique atmosphere to the area.
[ top: 1 ] Can't spot the nose? The nose is pitch dark here as lights has yet to reach it.
[ top: 1 ] And this remind me of National Day.
Finally I'm done with this mega long entry of 'i Light Marina Bay 2012'... But this might not be all. I've actually captured a few photos of the event using film by firing flash on the display. When I'm done with the roll, and development of it turns out successful, there would be more to be posted. For now, that's all.
